Sleep advice for toddlers

Toddler and pre-schooler sleeping problems

Toddlers and pre-schoolers need long periods of sleep. It’s thought that 1- 2 year olds need approximately 12 hours per day and between 2 – 5 year olds need approximately 11 hours sleep per day. However, children are all individual and these amounts may vary slightly from child to child.

How to tell if your toddler is not getting enough sleep

Are they happy and able to concentrate and enjoy the day (making exceptions for the odd tantrum)? If the answer is yes, then it would appear they are getting enough sleep.

Some of the (many) reasons why young children and toddlers don’t sleep

I

Behavioural reasons

This doesn’t mean that your child is badly behaved it simply means it’s something that they haven’t yet learned to do. Behaviours are one of the most common causes of sleep problems and easiest to fix with support

I

Poor routines

Especially bedtime routines. Toddlers and young children need routines, unable to tell the time they use routines to learn to expect what sort of things will be happening in the day ie breakfast time, playtime, bedtime

I

Not understanding cues to sleep

Some young children do not recognise their own cues to sleep and parents & carers need to learn what these are and pre-empt them

I

Overtired & Overstimulated

Especially in the evenings or at nap times

I

Naps

Sleeping at the wrong times, for too long or not long enough. Many toddlers and pre-schoolers need a nap during the day to refresh, however if this is too late in the day, it will delay the on-set of sleep

I

Sleep on-set associations

Dependence on something to get to sleep or stay asleep, from rocking, to dummies & white noise, to parents cuddling or lying with them

I

Early risers

Waking up before 6am

I

Unnecessary Rewards

Rewarding the non-sleeper, allowing them to fall asleep in the lounge, parents beds or to come into bed at night (if they don’t normally sleep with you)

I

Tablet, TV's and mobile phones before sleep

These emit blue lights which aren’t good for sleeping and the bright graphics also stimulate rather than relax your child, when they should be winding down

I

Diet and food

Too little, too much, too early and too late – too much processed foods can interfere with sleep also

I

Anxiety

Children’s anxiety about separating from parents or parent’s anxiety that they may cause harm to their child if they are allowed to cry. Also anxiety about noise and disturbing other children or the neighbours

I

Temperature controls

Toddlers and young children don’t need to sleep in very hot rooms and may well kick off duvets and blankets when they are asleep in order to cool down

I

Nighmares

Nightmares, night terrors and sleepwalking

I

Family pressures
